Executive Director’s Note (SEPT2021 Bulletin)

Leadership is a fundamental attitude (and aptitude) during the destination planning process, as it requires engaging others in a shared vision. It involves clearly identifying common objectives, as well as the key stakeholders whose commitment is essential for achieving them. It begins as a vague dream, gradually shaped by past experiences, and is built through everyone’s participation, thus requiring communication, credibility, commitment, and creativity.

Leadership has been precisely the quality that has allowed us to make considerable progress in just one year with the planning and organization of the destination’s management structures. The El Seibo-Miches Hotel and Tourism Association, Promiches, was born organically, through the shared interest of investors in developing a new destination, taking into account lessons learned from the past, to “do things right from the start.” And by organic, I don’t mean without any effort. It was precisely the leadership of Fernandito Rainieri, who passed away too soon, that was the mortar that united the will of the main hotel and real estate projects planned for the area in the coming years, under a single vision. And it is because of this capacity to work tirelessly, to rally support, to seek creative solutions to problems, to be responsible in his proposals, and to serve rather than seek personal gain, that the business sector and Miches will deeply miss Fernandito throughout this entire tourism development process.

Although the project began to take shape around 2017, it wasn’t until August 2020 that Promiches formally began operations, starting with the drafting of its bylaws, its work plan, and the design of its first operating budget. This work plan was shared in January 2021 with the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, and his team, and under his leadership, it became the Public-Private Partnership Agreement for the Tourism Development of Miches. This agreement was presented to President Abinader by Minister Collado during a meeting at the National Palace on February 24, 2021, and was signed just two months later, on April 25, 2021.
The Public-Private Agreement for the Tourism Development of Miches is the main guide for the construction of this new destination, currently being implemented by the private sector, represented by Promiches, and almost a dozen institutions of the Dominican State.

It represents an unprecedented destination planning exercise in our country and will allow the tourism development of the destination under a truly environmentally responsible and socially inclusive model.
