Sand to Sea: The New Boutique Experience Bringing Tourism and Conservation Together in Miches
Miches, Dominican Republic – August 6, 2026.
Miches continues to solidify its position as a destination where luxury and sustainability coexist authentically. This season, Promiches officially launched Sand to Sea, a boutique sea turtle release experience that allows visitors to participate, responsibly and guided by experts, in one of nature’s most extraordinary moments: the first journey of the hatchlings to the ocean.
The experience arises from the work carried out by PrototortoiseThe Miches Sea Turtle Conservation and Monitoring Program is an initiative that, since its inception, has protected the sea turtle species that visit the destination’s beaches to nest. Currently, the program protects 57.3 kilometers of coastline in Miches and Lavacama, thanks to the collaborative work with community coastal monitors who patrol the beaches day and night during nesting season.
Protortuga is one of the initiatives of Miches Conservation FundA collective effort that unites the tourism and business sectors to protect the destination’s natural heritage. The program is supported by Tropicalia; Secrets Playa Esmeralda Resort & Spa; Dreams Playa Esmeralda Resort & Spa; Zemi Miches All-Inclusive Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton; Viva Miches by Wyndham; Club Med Michès Playa Esmeraldaas well as other local companies committed to the conservation of sea turtles and coastal ecosystems in Miches.
Since the program’s inception, Protortuga has contributed to saving 7,593 sea turtle eggs, has released more than 3,018 newborns and has trained more than 1,000 people in marine conservation. In the 2026 season alone, the program identified and protected 28 nests on the beaches of Miches and Lavacama.
Sand to Sea It allows visitors to learn about this conservation work up close through an intimate and educational experience, conducted in small groups and designed under strict protocols to ensure the well-being of the newborns and their habitat.
Because hatching occurs entirely naturally, releases cannot be scheduled in advance. Interested visitors can register during their stay in Miches and are notified on the day of a hatching. At sunset, they participate in a guided experience that includes an introduction to the Protortuga program, information about the sea turtle species that visit the area, and finally, the responsible release of the hatchlings into the sea.
Each release is much more than a tourist activity. It’s an opportunity to understand the challenges sea turtles face from the moment they hatch. It’s estimated that less than 1% of hatchlings that reach the ocean will survive to adulthood, making every protected nest and every responsible release a significant contribution to the conservation of these species.
The sea turtle nesting season in Miches runs from March to September, a period when leatherback, green, and hawksbill turtles visit the destination’s beaches to lay their eggs. Thanks to initiatives like Protortuga and Sand to Sea, Miches stands out as one of the few Caribbean destinations offering visitors the opportunity to experience authentic marine conservation, transforming their trip into a way to make a positive impact.
With Sand to Sea, tourism ceases to be a mere spectator of nature and becomes an ally in its protection. Because in Miches, the best experiences are those that also help preserve what makes them possible.
