Miches Takes an Important Step Toward a Cleaner and More Sustainable Future

Promiches, the Miches City Council, School District 12-04, the Tropicalia Foundation and the GIZ's Caribbean Circular regional project, sign a letter of commitment within the framework of the "Cleaner Miches" initiative.

Miches, June 7, 2023 – In a joint effort to preserve the natural environment and promote sustainability in the Miches community, the El Seibo-Miches Hotel and Tourism Association (Promiches), the Miches City Council, School District 12-04, the Tropicalia Foundation, and the GIZ’s Caribbean Circular regional project have joined forces by signing a letter of commitment.

The event, which was attended by prominent figures such as Yamil Isaías, president of Promiches; Luz María Mercedes, mayor of Miches; Sorivel Núñez, director of school district 12-04; Sofia Perazzo, president of the Tropicalia Foundation; and Mara Beez, from the “Resilient El Seibo” project implemented by GIZ in Miches, established the following commitments aimed at:

  • Municipal strengthening within the framework of national regulations that promote the prevention and reduction of solid waste.
  • Participation in awareness campaigns on actions to prevent and reduce plastic waste in schools and communities.
  • Carrying out beach clean-up days on affected beaches that impact the region’s tourism dynamics.
  • Boost towards the comprehensive management of plastic waste from generation at the source to its final disposal for recycling purposes.

During the event, the mayor of Miches thanked everyone who collaborated to make the Caribe Circular project, implemented by the “Cleaner Miches” initiative, a reality in Miches. “I’ve always dreamed of Miches becoming a town that can recycle. That waste can be reused, giving it new value.”

For his part, Yamil Isaías emphasized that “the cleanliness of our town is a fundamental aspect for the presentation of the tourist destination, but, in addition, environmental conservation, such as the protection of sea turtles and marine fauna in general, has an important component of reducing and eliminating plastics, so we hope that this initiative will make ours a more sustainable destination.”

Mara Beez highlighted the work of the “Resilient Seibo” project to contribute to the protection of the environment in Miches, while teacher Sorivel Núñez emphasized that the Educational District will always have its doors open to support this type of project, and Sofia Perazzo underlined the commitment of the Tropicalia Foundation to education and the environment.
The signing of this letter of commitment marks a significant milestone on the path towards a cleaner and more sustainable Miches, consistent with the priorities established at the past International Sustainable Tourism Forum, organized by the Ministry of Tourism and the

World Tourism Organization; and the most recent efforts made by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to reduce single-use plastic in the country’s destinations.
In this way, Miches continues to position itself as an environmentally responsible tourist destination, developed under orderly planning, with public, private and local participation.
